Four Solutions for Common Bluetooth Problems

Despite Bluetooth's success in creating wireless technology that is very easy to use, there is inevitably going to be some problems. Such is the price of progress. Every time advances are made, there are going to be new problems that come up, and new situations that need to be dealt with. However, the good news is that these can be dealt with, and most of the problems aren't very extreme. In fact, most of the problems that come up with Bluetooth technology are pretty common, and have easy solutions. With that in mind, here are the four solutions for some of the more common Bluetooth problems.

Most of the problems – if not all of them – will have to do with pairing. In order to fix something, you first need to know what's going wrong, and what you're dealing with. Pairing is the process by which two separate Bluetooth devices will connect with each other. Essentially what happens is that each device will sense the other device, and then a connection will be formed. Over this connection, each device will send their respective passkeys, and if those check out, the devices will become paired. Once paired, all the information that is sent between those two devices in encrypted, so other Bluetooth devices that aren't paired will not have access to it. Of course, it could be a pain if you had to exchange passwords every time you wanted to send some information – say a business card for example. Fortunately, most Bluetooth technology comes with a variety of security settings for different types of files and you can simply lower the security level, and then send the information through.

The first thing you should check if you're having problems is to make sure that you can establish a connection. Usually when Bluetooth technology is implemented there will be no need to perform any additional operations once a connection has taken place. Generally speaking, mobile phones will automatically connect to headsets when a call is started. However, if at anytime you need re-pair two devices, go to a private, secure location, turn them both on, and re-pair.

Sometimes you will come across instances where it says that the devices cannot be found. This means that one of the two Bluetooth devices is not in "discoverable mode" – meaning the other device can't detect it. Other times the device simply is off, and you need to turn it on. The main solution is to set the Bluetooth device you're using into discoverable mode, allowing it to connect to another device. If you have security concerns, you can always change the mode of the device back to non-discoverable after you're finished.

 Bit of History
The web of domination has become the web of Reason itself, and this society is fatally entangled in it.
—Herbert Marcuse (1898–1979)

Sometimes pairing will succeed, but the Bluetooth devices still won't work. Usually this is because the two devices do not support the same profile – which is a requirement. To figure out what profiles your device supports, look in the user manual. Generally speaking two devices that would have a natural connection (such as a mobile phone and a headset) will support the same profile. This makes it a lot easier on the consumer when choosing technology that has a Bluetooth chip in it.

Lastly, sometimes the problem simply is that you can't find the right menu commands for making the connection. Unfortunately, since all manufacturers will implement Bluetooth technology in different ways, there is no one way to answer this question. The best advice would be to consult the manual that came with the device, or check the company's website for online support.

If all else fails, you can always find additional information for trouble-shooting on the website for whatever company manufactures the product. Presently, most companies provide support at least five days a week, if not around the clock. With support like that, it's impossible to find a problem that there isn't a solution for. Still, the best way for people to learn about a device is usually to simply use it a bunch. Sometimes what is in writing can look very complicated, when in actuality it is quite simple. Play around, and you may even find your way out of your problem. Bluetooth technology is very easy to use once you get the hang of it.
