Gone are the days of meetings done in "conference rooms with pens and papers on every seat". This period, being the Internet age, conferences now take place via a host of new communication facilities where information is given, shared and collaborated. Web conferencing is growing at a rapid pace and it is expected to double in a year's time. As more companies see the cost-effective advantages of web conferencing, many people become more familiar and comfortable with virtual communication.

So, what exactly is the advantage of virtual meetings?

For one, it costs a lot less.

Annual meetings, company trainings, travelling to business functions, product launching and other corporate events can become quite an expensive preparation. The introduction of web conferencing facilities has drastically reduced the cost of these. Furthermore, the biggest benefit of such a service allows for participants to meet online, even while they are all in different locations, thus cutting travel expenses usually incurred with face to face meetings. To the company's advantage, lateness and even absenteeism during meetings are reduced since a virtual meeting is a more convenient venue. Interaction is not at all missing, since web conferencing comes with the facility to allow for it. What's great about it is that, it does so at a fraction of the cost of face to face meetings.

In terms of rates of service, web conferencing rates have become relatively cheaper in the recent years. Early on, web conferencing facilities were quite difficult to use, on top of being very expensive. Some systems were also incompatible to the needs of the users. What's more, most company didn't have the resources to handle date requirements of web conferencing systems, resulting in choppy videos and failed connections. Fortunately these days, many web conferencing companies now only charge a maximum amount of $20 a month and service features have greatly improved since then. Therefore, it is now very affordable to subscribe to any web conferencing service that fits any kind of need.

Another benefit to using web conferencing service as opposed to traditional face to face meetings is the fact that virtual meetings can become a combination of a video conferencing with training sessions. The participants can just easily log into a site using a password and with just a click of the mouse, the participants can take part in the discussion; do demonstrations, share information or even do tutorials.

 Quote of the Day
The peace conference must not adjourn without the establishment of some ordered system of international government, backed by power enough to give authority to its decrees. ... Unless a league something like this results at our peace conference, we shall merely drop back into armed hostility and international anarchy. The war will have been fought in vain ...
—Virginia Crocheron Gildersleeve (1877–1965)

Because the facilities' infrastructures allow for support of interactive data and communication, some companies make use of web conferencing to hold their training courses, market research, employee meetings, public relations and investor relations, press conference; and even Web site launches and E-commerce applications.

Many companies are also discovering that virtual conferences make for an effective marketing tool. With this application, sale presentations can take place at a client's convenience. Time wasted on the hassle of going to face to face meetings, is no doubt, eliminated. In the business world, a fraction of a time can make a huge difference. As such, profitability and product boom can be achieved.

Studies have shown that virtual meetings outperform traditional face to face interactions when it comes to generating ideas. Participants at web conferences have been proven to brainstorm more effectively, since they can throw out ideas and suggestions in a shorter period of time. Yet, there are a couple of hitches. Some people may find the use of technology as challenging and uncomfortable. But the great thing us, if the application is used repeatedly, there will be an improved level of use and comfort and user will become familiar.

Because the technology is there and is continually improving, it is safe to assume that web conferencing service is an application that is stable and very useful. Companies providing such service are all over the Internet, serving small-sized companies to large corporate giants. Company rates may vary depending on specifications and requirements. Most of these service providers charge flat rates.

Technology has made dissemination of information and knowledge at more rapid rates. Even conference rooms in many hotels are now wired to the Internet. And as web conferencing allow for collaboration, not only of ideas, but data and document, users or participants are more willing to interact in virtual meetings. The environment thus stimulates better exchange of ideas and sharing of knowledge and information. With web conferencing, the possibilities are endless.

Look Ma No Cords! What Wireless Really Means in Computer Terms
By Percy Dodson
We have all been driving a car to locations unknown with nothing but a computer generated map, only to discover a major road closure and no mention of alternate routes. Unless we carry a trusty assortment of city maps, or a car powered direction service, how will we find a new map? We might want to call the party we are visiting, but unfortunately the phone number for Aunt Louise's party is safely tucked away in our e-mail inbox, and we are currently twenty miles away from our home computer....
