Now that you have decided that you wish to do Podcasting, there are some things you will need to pay attention to. If you want to obtain an audience you need to ensure that the broadcast captures them right from the start. Podcasting unlike many other varieties of broadcasting, is much more difficult to gain listeners. You need to have a format that will draw the audience in and then retain their attention. This can be done in a variety of ways, finding the right formula for success is as in many cases a trial and error. What you really need is a few pointers to get you going in the right direction; this will ensure that there is an audience that will want to buy your Podcast.

A very important issue that is often overlooked is the use of a good microphone. If you do not have a good mic, chances are the listener will know it. One of the best microphones that you could use for your Podcast at home is a Cardioids Condenser microphone. This is a mic with a very large diaphragm. These wonderful microphones are very clear; they are great at keeping the distortion and fuzz out of your transmission. One of the great things about these microphones is that it is a directional microphone. This means that anything directly in front of it will sound loud and clear, and the background noises will be just that simply background noises. This will eliminate all kinds of feedback and noises beside or behind you.

It is always good to have the material ready for the broadcast however, it is really not suggested that you have it completely scripted. You want people to feel comfortable with the Podcast, having it completely scripted will give the impression that the broadcast is more of a lecture than a show. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having yourself prepared, just make sure that you are not pushing yourself on your audience. This is basically nothing more than appropriate formatting. This is a great way to eliminate stress in your broadcasting experience as well. So in other words best to prepare, not script your Podcast.

—Garrett Fort (1900–1945)

Formatting is a very big issue as well. It is important to ensure that you have proper editing as to keep your format on track. If you have decided to do your own editing, make sure that you have gone over your format with a fine toothcomb. People like to hear fluid, steady organized broadcasting, not a jumble of conversation that is not leading anywhere. This separates the good from the bad, when it comes to Podcasting. If you want your product to sell, you need to have it in a nice clean package. People really do not pay much attention to things that are poorly displayed, make sure your Podcast is not sloppy and it will sell.

A very good way to sell your product to the listeners is to incorporate the listeners themselves. By adding a voice answering machine into the dialog, for feedback purposes you have just included them into the show. When you think about it, how many people do you know that do not like to hear they speak? Better yet how many do you know that would not like to hear them on a radio talk show? The answer to that is very simple, not many. Introduce your listeners into the mix, and you have then just sold the show to them. Once they are sold they will continue to listen.

Considering Podcasting is a subscription-based medium, many people will be looking for the broadcast at a set time. This is where scheduling comes in handy, if the show comes on at random times chances are people can easily miss it. This will not go down well with the crowd that is actually paying for the service or for the show itself. Keep the show on one set time, this way you will be able to have an audience that can be relied on to hear it. If your audience has to chase your show, just to hear it chances are they will go elsewhere. Keep these few simple rules in the back of your mind when making a Podcast, and you can almost bet it will sell.
